Zacatecas, 30 de marzo de 2026.- Zacatecas, March 30, 2026.- President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo defended the name of the Gulf of Mexico on March 28, 2026 during an event with farmers in Zacatecas, in response to statements made by US President Donald Trump the previous day.
Trump stated on March 27, 2026, at the Saudi Investment Forum in Miami, Florida, that the Mexican president called him by phone surprised when he announced the name change within his territory.
During the event in Zacatecas, Sheinbaum Pardo asked the attendees: “But yesterday they again said that the Gulf was called Gulf of America, what is the Gulf called?”. The attendees responded in unison: “Of Mexico”.
The president reiterated that the relationship with the US government is one of partners and that Mexico defends its nationals abroad.
“It is not a conflict nor do we want any problem with the US government. We are partners. We want our brothers who live there, we defend them,” she expressed.
Despite the executive order signed by Trump, the name Gulf of Mexico remains in force in the international nomenclature system. The International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), based in Monaco, is the international body that determines the official names of seas and oceans worldwide.
Both Mexico and the United States are members of the IHO, which to date has not issued any ruling endorsing the name change proposed by the Trump administration.
